MEROPE Lithuania / Belgium / France
“Naktes is a drawn-out dream from which you don't want to wake up. An example of how musicians from different spheres respectfully work together. ” Klara awarded Merope's last record with the prize for best world music album and anyone who reads the jury report knows that this band can provide subdued fireworks. This is partly due to the beautiful voice of Indre Jurgeleviciute and her wonderful Kankles (a Lithuanian zither instrument), but also to the wonderful guitar playing with additional electronics by Bert Cools and lyrical bansuri playing of Jean-Christophe Bonnafous.
Merope is inspired by nature and dreams, their music tells stories about the connection between man and nature. Mystery and folk flow into the ocean of modern times.
With Naktes Merope won the klara award '19 for best world music release.
Their newest album Salos (Lithuanian for 'islands') will be released in March on 2 labels Stroom en granvat.
(Salos is an off-map archipelago of seven songs. Special guest sailing along Salos is the Vilnius Chamber Choir Jauna Muzika, a nebula of voices conducted by Vaclovas Augustinas who's compositional works contribute to the sonorous biosphere. Also Kjartan Sveinsson (pianist Sigur Ros), Gyda Valtisdottir (Mùm) and Shahzad Ismaily (Marc Ribot) are sailing along on 2 songs. )
